Becoming a Professional Organizer: Learn By Doing

Are you thinking about becoming a Professional Organizer, but don't know where or how to start? My advice to you is to "Learn By Doing". Let me explain what I mean.

There is no substitute for practical experience. I have seen some expensive courses offered on the web to train Professional Organizers. Yes, I have some books on becoming a Professional Organizer on this site. That is because I know that when I start something, I like to read a book or two to make sure that I don't have to reinvent the wheel. I like to have a little road map of where I am going. But I don't need a super-expensive guided tour.

Now, I am not saying that you should quit your current job and open up shop as a Professional Organizer. That would be foolish. It takes time to build up a business, or even to know if it is right for you. My advice would be to start doing Professional Organizing part-time, in your spare time. That way, you can get experience and build up a business before burning any bridges behind you, such as quitting your current job.

If you can't find clients right away, work on your friends or relatives. Organize them for free. Or even, practice on yourself. How organized is your house? Take some before and after pictures as you are doing these free jobs. They will come in handy later.

Meanwhile, start to think about marketing. How are you going to get some paying clients? Brainstorm and get some creative ideas.

At least this way, you are doing something to move towards your goal. Do a little something every day to move toward your goals, and you will amaze yourself at your progress.
